Democratic-led county council in
Maryland cuts workers’ benefits
BY GLOVA SCOTT
WASHINGTON—The Montgomery County Council in Maryland unanimously passed a budget May 19 that cuts $25 million from education and $33 million in health and retirement benefits for government and school employees. County Council president Valerie Ervin, speaking for the all-Democratic council, said, “It’s time for all of us to live within our means.”
There will also be a 1 percent increase in property taxes and several hundred thousand dollars in cuts to public libraries. Meanwhile, the police department budget is being raised by nearly $3 million.
Another proposal includes increasing health-care premiums for government workers from 20 percent to 25 percent unless they join HMO plans. The county council also proposed long-term cuts to pension plans by capping future cost-of-living increases.
If it passes a final vote, set for May 26, the budget will go into effect July 1. Public union officials, who had organized an earlier rally to protest budget cut proposals in Rockville, Maryland, are working as part of a county “task force” to hammer out details of cuts to workers’ health-care plans.

Michele Bachmann is stupider than a H.S. sophomore.
Picture this: a debate between Rep. Michele Bachmann and a high school sophomore. Who do you think would win?
For years, I've watched Michele Bachmann say inaccurate, outlandish and downright offensive things that should never be tolerated -- and I've watched the media give her a pass time and time again. It's horrifying.
Fortunately, I'm not the only one who is horrified. Amy Myers, a brave high school student in New Jersey has captured national media attention for challenging Michele Bachmann to a debate on U.S. History and Civics.

Come on Communists, take over the Democrats, punks!
Nothing is more frustrating than working your heart out for a bad candidate, just because they're a Democrat.
All across the country I've heard people complain that they don't have enough local candidates that share our progressive values. The problem isn't that good candidates don't exist - the problem is that you haven't recruited them...yet.
Starting next week DFA is going to give you the skills to recruit and prepare local progressives to run for office - all you have to do is sign up!
Register for the Spring Semester of DFA Night School!
This semester of Night School will tackle the question of 'Getting a Campaign Off the Ground'. Help Debra out now
The CA-36 special primary election is just six days away and we need your help to make sure DFA-endorsed candidate Debra Bowen closes strong.
Debra is kicking her Get Out The Vote operation into high gear during the final four days of the election. But the success of this operation will depend on DFA members to step up and push progressive champion Debra Bowen over the top. Can you help deliver the resources Debra needs to win?
Contribute $5 right now to fuel Debra's GOTV campaign today!
Debra has always run campaigns empowered by grassroots activists. In this race, over 90% of her contributions have been for less than $100, and over 80% of all contributions have come online.
But Debra's opponent Janice Hahn is being boosted by $75,000 from an insurance industry outfit targeting Debra's defeat. And according to the L.A. Times, about half of Hahn's campaign contributions come from "lobbyists, developers, and others doing business with the city" -- the ultimate City Hall insiders.
Debra is a progressive leader who has always put principle over politics. But to ensure victory on May 17th, we need to make sure Debra has the resources to finish her grassroots campaign strong.
Put Debra over the top -- Contribute $5 now.
Thank you for everything you do.

Draft Ol' Russ
Earlier today, Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl announced he was retiring after 24 years in Washington.
Thankfully, there's a progressive champion waiting in the wings to step up and keep this seat for the Democrats in 2012: Russ Feingold.
I don't need to tell you about Russ or his progressive legacy -- the only Senator to vote against the Patriot Act, a national leader for campaign finance reform and against the war in Iraq, and so much more.
He was swept out in last year's Republican wave, but now more than ever we need a progressive champion like Russ fighting for middle class Americans in the Senate.
Sign the petition to draft Russ Feingold for Senate.
Thank you for everything you do.

Get out of Afghanistan!
An endless war in Afghanistan is not in America's best interest.
This October will mark the 10-year anniversary of the start of Operation Enduring Freedom. I believe it's time to start bringing our troops home. It's time to put the future and security of Afghanistan in the hands of its own leaders, and focus America's national security on the emerging and more imminent threats from al Qaeda in other regions.
After nearly a decade at war, with still no equal commitment from the Karzai government, and after all the lives sacrificed and the billions we've spent on this war, it is my strong view that it is time to negotiate a Strategic Redeployment Agreement with Afghanistan that would mandate a date certain for the withdrawal of all United States combat forces.
This is why Senators Barbara Boxer, Sherrod Brown, Dick Durbin and I are co-sponsors of the Safe and Responsible Redeployment of United States Combat Forces from Afghanistan Act of 2011. The bill is simple and straight forward and I believe absolutely essential. So today, I'm asking you to stand with us as citizen co-sponsors.
Please add your name as a citizen co-sponsor and help demonstrate the vast support of Americans nationwide who believe it's time to bring our combat troops home and end the war in Afghanistan.
President Obama has already committed to begin the transfer of our forces out of Afghanistan this July and that is a vitally important step forward. However, this alone is not enough. I believe a clear combat redeployment agreement would help our efforts in Afghanistan by reinforcing Afghan sovereignty and protecting both the readiness and the flexibility we need to meet the full array of global security challenges that confront our country.
I have great confidence in the ability of our troops and the strategic focus of our commanders. We are not suggesting our government spell out every stage of U.S. troop redeployment -- specific decisions should be up to commanders on the ground and avoid giving the enemy a potential propaganda tool. Nor should we change the protection for our troops and flexibility for our mission that has been agreed upon in previous agreements.
However, it is critical we provide for a date certain for withdrawal of our combat forces, in order to give certainty to the American people; to ensure maximum flexibility in responding to other contingencies; and to publicly endorse the Afghan Government's assumption of lead responsibility as planned.
This is why we must pass the Safe and Responsible Redeployment of United States Combat Forces from Afghanistan Act now.
Please join me as a citizen co-sponsor today.
The time has come. Working together, we can end the war in Afghanistan.
Thank you for everything you do to move America forward.

Socialist Candidate for Miami mayor at protest
Socialist in Miami joins immigrant rights rally |

MIAMI—Deborah Liatos, Socialist Workers Party candidate for mayor of Miami-Dade County, speaks at March 28 immigrant rights protest in the Little Havana neighborhood here. “This fight for legalization of undocumented workers is needed to unite our class in struggle against the bosses and their government,” she said. In the coming weeks, Liatos and campaign supporters will be joining families protesting the recent killings of seven Black men by Miami cops, and May Day demonstrations in defense of unions and rights of immigrant workers. Liatos is also campaigning for the release of the Cuban Five, who have been in U.S. prisons since 1998. Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, and René González were framed up and convicted by the government on bogus “conspiracy” charges. The five had been monitoring the activities of counterrevolutionary Cuban American paramilitary groups in South Florida that have a history of carrying out violent actions and sabotage against Cuba. —NAOMI CRAINE |

Rally in Brooklyn supports
locked-out building workers
BY SARA LOBMAN
BROOKLYN, New York—More than 300 workers joined a spirited rally outside Flatbush Gardens apartments here April 26 to support 70 locked-out maintenance workers and porters at the large housing complex.
The workers have been fighting a lockout by Renaissance Equity Holdings since Nov. 29, 2010. Landlord David Bistricer hired replacement workers when the union refused the company’s “best and final” offer that would have slashed pay by more than 30 percent, cut vacation time, and forced workers to pay for health insurance.
“We’re here fighting for better conditions,” Alan Jones, one of the Flatbush Garden workers, said. “I started working here 10 years ago for $8.50 an hour. I’ve finally worked my way up to $20 and they want to push me back nearly to where I started. I rent a studio apartment here too,” he added. “So every month I give them back $850!”

Defending Democracy is hard work
As a legislator in Montana, I'm proud that my state has defeated several bills aimed at suppressing the vote.
Unfortunately Montana is one of only a few success stories in efforts to combat a concerted Republican campaign to make it much more difficult to vote in dozens of states across the country.
In a New York Times editorial last week, the Advancement Project, a civil rights advocacy group, described this rash of Republican-sponsored legislation as "the largest legislative effort to scale back voting rights in a century."

BP must pay
Destroying our gulf shouldn't be a tax write-off. Tell BP to pay their fair share.
UPDATE: Wednesday afternoon, we learned that BP's tax break will be even bigger than was first reported - an outrageous $13 billion!1 A BP spokesman wouldn't say if the company is paying any U.S. taxes at all this year. It could even be getting a refund. Please take action to hold BP accountable.
No subsidies for oil companies
Tell Congress: End oil subsidies
As Americans continue to struggle with outrageous, unstable gas prices, oil companies continue to benefit from them.
Exxon Mobile announced Thursday a first-quarter profit of $10.6 billion -- a 69% increase from last year, and a number so astronomical, Exxon executives felt the need to issue defensive statements before the announcement.1 Also unveiling massive earnings were Shell ($6.3 billion, up 30%), ConocoPhillips ($3 billion, up 44%), and of course, BP (7.1 Billion, up 16%). In all, the five largest oil companies have reaped nearly $1 trillion in profits in the last 10 years.
